In 2009, an Aarhus Centre opened in Kurgan-Tyube (Bohtar) followed by the Aarhus Centre Khorog in 2011. In 2013, an Aarhus Centres was established in the city of Garm. In Tajikistan, youth is at the driving seat of many of the Aarhus Centre activities that promote environmental awareness, disaster risk reduction and stakeholder engagement in uranium legacy remediation.
In 2019, beside the awareness raising on principles of Aarhus Convention and provision of advisory services on environmental rights, the Arhus Centers continued their outreach activities (training workshops, information sessions, round tables) focusing on promotion of green economy principles, sustainable waste management and recycling at community level. In 2020, the Aarhus Centers will follow up on 2019 outreach activities with main focus on environmental campaign "Say no to plastic" and the roundtable discussions on the new State Environmental Education Program for 2021-2026.
